 인간은 태어날때부터 살아가는 동안 자유롭고 평등하게 권리를 누려야 한다. 사회적 차이들을 인정한다면 그것은 오직 전 사회 구성원들의 이익에 부합할 때만 그래야 한다.(사회적 차이들은 오직 공동선 위에서 기초될 수 있다.)

: social distinctions 은 좋은 의미건 나쁜 의미건, 사회적 구별짓기, 사회적 차이점들로 봐야할 것이다. 

: 사회 구성원 모두의 이익이라는 토대 위에서 사회적 차이들은 정초될 수 있다.
