The Israel-Hamas war has triggered a growing divide within Hollywood, an institution that’s long had a reputation of being dominated by liberals who share similar political beliefs.
Initially, in the wake of the Palestinian militant group Hamas’ attacks on Israel on Oct. 7, many Jewish members of the industry said they felt disillusioned about their peers’ silence.
But in recent weeks, those who have been most outspoken in support of Palestinians and against Israel’s military actions in Gaza have begun to be met with professional blowback.
After CAA agent Maha Dakhil sparked controversy with a series of posts on Instagram, including one that said: “What’s more heartbreaking than witnessing genocide?
Witnessing the denial that genocide is happening,” she was demoted by the talent agency, before apologizing and telling Variety that she had “made a mistake.” Variety also reported that some of her colleagues wanted her fired, a consequence that others in the industry are starting to face.
On Tuesday, Academy Award-winning actress Susan Sarandon was dropped by her talent agency over comments she made at a pro-Palestinian rally last week, and actress Melissa Barrera was fired from the cast of the upcoming thriller Scream VII, in which she was slated to reprise her leading role in the franchise.
Since the start of the Israel-Hamas war, Barrera, 33, has used her social media platform frequently to showcase her support for the Palestinian cause and to share information about the situation in Gaza, including resharing Instagram posts and articles describing Israeli forces’ attacks as “genocide and ethnic cleansing” and referring to Israel as a “colonized land.”
She wrote on Instagram stories she had been trying to look for online information about the war from Palestinians’ perspectives “because Western media only shows the other side.”
“Why they do that, I will let you deduce for yourself,” she wrote. She also reshared a post from Jewish Currents that included a reference to “the distortion of the Holocaust to boost the Israeli arms industry.”
Spyglass Media Group, the production company behind Scream VII, said in a statement Tuesday: “Spyglass’ stance is unequivocally clear: We have zero tolerance for antisemitism or the incitement of hate in any form, including false references to genocide, ethnic cleansing, Holocaust distortion or anything that flagrantly crosses the line into hate speech.”
Barrera had previously spoken out against antisemitism. “It is important for me to clarify that when I say Free Palestine,” she posted on Instagram on Oct. 27, “I do not in any way mean: Kill all Jews.” She added that she wanted freedom and safety for Palestines and Jews around the world.
Christopher Landon, who is set to direct the Scream VII, wrote in a now-deleted post on X: “Everything sucks. Stop yelling. This was not my decision to make.”
Barrera, who has not yet officially commented on her dismissal from the film but has continued to share information on Gaza on her social media platform, reposted on her Instagram stories earlier this week a photo that reads: “At the end of the day, I’d rather be excluded for who I include, than be included for who I exclude.”

The Hollywood talent agency UTA has dropped Susan Sarandon as a client after she spoke at a pro-Palestine rally over the weekend, a spokesperson for the agency confirmed to Deadline.
The Oscar-winning actor attended several rallies in support of Palestine and drew criticism for saying:
“There are a lot of people afraid of being Jewish at this time, and are getting a taste of what it feels like to be a Muslim in this country.”

In remarks captured on video, Sarandon encouraged others to keep speaking up in support of Palestinians in the Israel-Hamas war.
“People are questioning, people are standing up, people are educating themselves, people are stepping away from brainwashing that started when they were kids,” said Sarandon at the rally. She encouraged attendees to “be strong, be patient, be clear and stand with anybody who has the courage to speak out” and thanked “the Jewish community who’s come out to have our backs”.
Sarandon went on to repost a pro-Palestinian message from Pink Floyd’s Roger Waters on X, formerly known as Twitter. Waters has been criticized over the years for alleged antisemitic remarks, although he has always rejected those claims, previously saying:
“I have spent my entire life speaking out against authoritarianism and oppression wherever I see it. When I was a child after the war, the name of Anne Frank was often spoken in our house, she became a permanent reminder of what happens when fascism is left unchecked. My parents fought the Nazis in World War II, with my father paying the ultimate price.”
Since the Hamas attack on 7 October that killed at least 1,200 Israelis and led to hundreds being taken hostage, more than 14,000 people have been killed in the Israeli assault on Gaza, including at least 5,600 children, according to the government in the occupied territories.
Sarandon is the latest public figure to find themselves in hot water over their stance on the war, particularly in support of Palestine. Scream VI star Melissa Barrera, who was lined up to play the lead in the upcoming Scream VII, was fired from the film on Tuesday by the production company Spyglass; the company told Variety they removed her from the film due to some social media posts that had been interpreted as antisemitic.
Barrera has been posting on her Instagram about her support for Palestine and described Israel as committing “genocide”, and “brutally killing innocent Palestinians, mothers and children, under the pretence of destroying Hamas”.
“Western media only shows the [Israeli] side. Why do they do that, I will let you deduce for yourself,” she wrote on 22 October, adding: “We don’t need more hate. No Islamophobia. No Anti-semitism [sic].”
The Guardian has not confirmed which posts Spyglass was referring to. Barrera has yet to respond to requests for comment.
Last month, Maha Dakhil, the co-head of film at Hollywood powerhouse agency CAA, faced internal backlash and resigned from the agency’s board after she reposted an image on Instagram that read, in part: “You’re currently learning who supports genocide.”
Dakhil added the caption: “That’s the line for me.” She then posted a second image that read: “What’s more heartbreaking than witnessing genocide? Witnessing the denial that genocide is happening.”
The posts prompted the screenwriter Aaron Sorkin, one of Dakhil and CAA’s prominent clients, to publicly denounce her words and leave the agency for rival William Morris Endeavor Entertainment (WME). “Maha isn’t an antisemite, she’s just wrong. She’s a great agent and I’m very proud of the work we did together over the last six years,” Sorkin said in a statement to Variety.
Dakhil has since deleted both images and made a public apology. “I made a mistake with a repost in my Instagram story, which used hurtful language. Like so many of us, I have been reeling with heartbreak. I pride myself on being on the side of humanity and peace,” Dakhil said in a statement to Variety.
“I’m so grateful to Jewish friends and colleagues who pointed out the implications and further educated me. I immediately took the repost down. I’m sorry for the pain I have caused,” she said.
Sarandon reportedly signed with UTA in 2014. She appeared this year in the movies Blue Beetle and Maybe I Do, and did a handful of television appearances.

Actress Susan Sarandon has been blasted for controversial comments she made about Israel’s war against Hamas.
The Thelma & Louise star has attended several pro-Palestine rallies in New York where she has joined in the contentious chant “from the river to the sea.” While some say the slogan advocates for equality and liberty for Palestinians, others argue it implies the eradication of the state of Israel.
At a protest outside Penn Station in New York City, the 77-year-old Oscar winner raised eyebrows for leading chants and making some new shocking remarks.
The actress, also a left-wing campaigner known for her protests with Jane Fonda against the Iraq war, her embrace of environmentalism and her support for Bernie Sanders, led provocative chants and spoke to the crowd.

“There are a lot of people afraid of being Jewish at this time, and are getting a taste of what it feels like to be a Muslim in this country,” she said.
Susan, a left-wing campaigner known for her protests with Jane Fonda against the Iraq war, her embrace of environmentalism and her support for Bernie Sanders, continued: “It's important to listen, it's important to have facts. You don't have to go through the entire history of that region, you just have to show the babies that are dying in incubators.”

“Those images are enough to show you that something is drastically wrong. We need a ceasefire now,” she concluded to the crowd.
Her comments about Jewish people “getting a taste for what it feels like to be a Muslim,” have come under fire, with Muslim-American journalist Asra Nomani pointing out Sarandon doesn’t actually know what it’s like to be a Muslim in America.
“Hi there @SusanSarandon,” former Wall Street journalist Asra wrote in a tweet. “Let me tell you what it means to be Muslim in America.”
“Please don't minimise the experience of Jewish Americans by sanitising the hell that it is for Muslims living in Muslim countries and vilifying America for the life — and freedoms — she offers Muslims like my family,” she added.
“Go, live like a Muslim woman in a Muslim country,” she said in the fiery remarks. “You will come back to America and kiss the land beneath your feet.”
