1. 왜 코로나 정국에 베조스, 마에자와, 엘론 머스트 등 개인 부자들이 우주여행을 하고 있는가?

 

몇 관련 외신 기사들을 보고 난 후 소감. 일본 기업가 마에자와와 러시아 우주국의 이해관계가 맞아 떨어졌다고 본다. 2019년 이후 우주여행을 기획한, 온라인 의류사업가 마에자와 개성, 그리고  적자와 저임금에 허덕이는 러시아 연방우주국 '로스코스모스'의 돈벌이 목표가 이번 12일간의 '개인 우주여행'을 성사시켰다.

(로스코스모스 roscosmos, 우주 비행, 우주 비행기술과 과학, 우주 공간 탐사를 담당하는  '러시아 연방 우주국', 미국 나사 NASA에 해당함)

 

수퍼부자들이 겉으로야 태양계 행성과 달에다 '인류 도시'를 건설한다고 한다지만, 세계 정부가 없는 상태에서, 누가 이 부자 개인에게 그럴 권리를 부여했는가? 의문이 든다. 지구 전체 투표에 부칠 사안이다.  

 

제프 베조스는 노동자 임금 덜 주고 저축해서, 11분간 우주 여행하고, 330억 (2800만 달러) 내고, 마에자와는 베조스의 3배를 내고 12일간 우주선 여행을 한다. 인간의 우주 여행 꿈의 실현이기도 하고, 그냥 300톤 이산화탄소를 성층권에 배출하는 오염덩어리 쇼라고도 볼 수 있다.

현실에서는 냉정한 현금 장사가 있다. 마에자와는 부정부패, 사업실패, 적자로 허덕이던 러시아 국영 우주국 '로스코스모스'의 반가운 고객에 지나지 않은가?  

 

우주 여행을 정치적으로 이용하려는 러시아 푸틴의 현 주소. 러시아 푸틴이 코로나 정국에서 인기가 떨어지자, 대중의 관심을 '우주'로 끌기 위해서 우주 프로젝트를 띄우기도 했으나 별로 성공을 거두지 못했는지, 2022~2024년 우주산업 예산을 16%씩 2년간 대폭 삭감했다.  

 

2. 러시아 우주국의 귀빈고객, 1030억을 쓴 마에자와 유사쿠는 누구인가?  

 

흥미로운 사실은, 2조 넘는 자산가 마에자와가 '조조타운' 회사에서 주 30시간을 실시했다는 점이다. 산업부문에 따라, 기술발전 정도, 생산성 발달, 생산-교환-유통-소비 관계망, 노-사 권력관계 등에 따라, 자본가와 노조의 타협, 혹은 임금을 절약하는 방식으로, 임금삭감 없이도 자본가가 선도적으로 노동시간을 단축시킬 수도 있다. 이처럼 여러가지 권력관계가 노동시간을 둘러싸고 작동한다.   (조조타운의 주 30시간 실행에 대해서는 따로 조사가 필요하다. 온라인 시장이라는 것도 감안해야)

 

1) 특이한 이력 소유자, 음악,미술,옷 사업가인 마에자와 유사쿠.

1975년 고졸, 인디 밴드, 의류 사업가, 본 조비,메탈리카, 엑스 재팬, 라디오헤드 등 좋아함.  1975년 지바 출생. 어린시절부터 남달라. 온라인 뉴스 매체에 따르면, 어린 시절 친구들과 놀기보다는 딱정벌레를 수집하면서 놀았다고 함.

 

2) 예술가들을 동반해 우주 여행 기획했었다. 그는 2019년부터 우주여행을 치밀하게 준비했고,  처음에는 다양한 예술가들을 동반하려고 했으나, 계획을 바꿔 이번 우주 여행 12일 동안 영화 제작자 히라노 요조가 마에자와 여행기를 촬영하기로 했다.

베테랑 우주선장 알렉산더 미수킨이 소유즈(Soyuz)호를 조종하고, 12월 8일 수요일, 카자흐스탄에 있는 우주 기지 (공항) '바이코누르' 출발했다.

 

당일, 마에자와가 창립했던  조조 회사 직원들이 우주선 발사 생중계를 보면서, 회사로고와 일본기를 흔들며 응원했다. 유투브에서도 마에자와가 어떻게 앞으로 우주선 안에서 12일간 여행을 하는지 소개하면서 흥분을 감추지 못했다.

 

3) 마에자와 유사쿠 누구인가?  (영어판 위키 + 관련 뉴스 요약 정리함)

46세 일본 패션업 부자. 재산은 19억 달러. 2조 2416억원. 마에자와는 2000년 현재 조조타운 (zozotown) 으로 성장한 한 소매 웹사이트 창업해 성공. 2019년 조조 주식을 야후 재팬에 매각. 엘론 머스크 우주 여행 기획에도 천문학적 돈을 제공함.

연도별로 살펴보면,  

1998년 스타트 투데이 회사 설립. 2004년  온라인 의류 소매상 조조타운 개설. 현재 일본에서 가장 큰 회사. 

1991년 와세다 지추교 고등학교 졸업.

인디 밴드하던 도중, 여자친구와 미국으로 건너가, 음반 CD 수집해 일본에서 되팔아 번 돈으로,  스타트 투데이라는 우편 배달 회사 창립.

2000년 온라인 플랫폼 회사로 변신.

2004년 온라인 의류 판매 웹사이트 조조타운 개설.

2012년 스타트 투데이가 도쿄 주식시장 제 1 면에 오름.

2019년 마에자와가 조조 회사에서 사임하고, 회사 주식 50.1%을  소프트뱅크에 매각 ( 37억 달러 상당). 그 개인 주식 30%도 야후 재팬에 매각했다.

2019년 마에자와가 자기에서 리트윗을 하면 1000명에게 1천만원씩 주겠다고 해, 400만명 넘는 사람들이 마에자와 트위터 놀이에 참가하고 팔로워가 되었다.  

2019년 러시아를 배워서 우주선장과 소통하고 싶다고 발표, 우주여행 계획 수립.

 

4) 인디 밴드를 하면서 앨범을 낸 바 있는 마에자와가 음악 이외에도 미술에도 투자를 했다는 점이 흥미롭다.

3. 러시아 푸틴과 로스코스모스 대표 로고진의 부정부패 공금 횡령 혐의.

 

마에자와는 로스코스모스의 귀빈 고객으로 기록될 것이다. 우주선 1회 발사하는데, 이산화탄소 300톤을 배출한다. 이 이산화탄소는 성층권에 수년간 머물러 있다고 함. 오염 제거 비용도 내야 하는데, 앞으로 이런 문제를 어떻게 처리할 것인가? 문제다.

 

마에자와의 12일간 여행 촬영이 어떤 상업적 대중적 성공을 거둘지, 혹은 인류 평화에 기여할 지는 불확실하다. 하지만 러시아 연방 우주국장 로고진의 부정부패 논란과 국영사업 성적 부진으로 예산 삭감 당한 '로스코스모스'에게 마에자와는 반가운 고객이다.

 

 

미국 '나사'에 해당하는 러시아 '로스코스모스' 대표 드미트리 로고진의 부정부패 혐의와 러시아 우주산업의 불투명성에 대한 기사 요약.

 

미국은 우주여행 상업화 시작,  중국은 우주정거장 건설 소유, 러시아 미국에 도전장을 내고 있는 형국이다. 러시아는 기존 우주 기술 보유하고 있으나, 러시아 연방 우주국, 국영업체인 로스코스모스의 부정부패 논란으로 우주산업 종사들 저임금과 사기 저하, 푸틴 예산 삭감으로 미-중 경쟁에서 불리한 위치에 서 있다.

 

푸틴, 2022-2024년 2년간 연간 16% 우주산업 예산 삭감. 드미트리 올레고비치 로고진 불만을 표출하다.

 

2022년 29억 달러 (전년 대비 약 5.57억 달러 삭감), 2023년에도 동일액수 삭감예정.

삭감 대상은 주로 우주선 제조와 우주기지 건설비용임.

 

삭감 이유는, 2020년 로스코스모스가 83개 목표중 30개 실패해서, 푸틴이 격노했다.

미국 스페이스-엑스 와 경쟁에서 뒤처짐.

첫번째는, 나사의 국제 우주 정거장 이용 소득 4억 달러 손실

2006년 이후 나사(NASA)는 70개 소유즈 좌석 확보를 위해 로스코스모스에 40억 달러를 지불해왔음)

두번째, 유나이티드 론칭 얼라이언스가  RD-180 로켓 엔진을 러시아부터 더 이상 구매 하지 않음.

 

이러한 로스코스모스 적자 운영, 1991년 소련 연방 해체 이후, 지난 수 십 년간 문제가 되었다.

러시아는 우주산업체를 국영화시킴으로써 문제를 타개하려고 했다. 로스코스모스와 계약을 맺은 우주 산업 회사들 명단은 다음과 같음.

(RKK Energia, The Khrunichev Center, RCC Progress, NPO Energomash, TsENKI, and TsNIIMash)

 

2013년 러시아가 이들 회사를 국영화했고, 2016년 러시아 국가 우주국이 해체되고 로스코스모스 국영회사에 합병됨.

 

2018년 로고진 (Rogozin)이 로스코스모스 대표 임명. 그러나 러시아 동부에 우주공항(기지) 건설에 부정부패로 논란이 계속되고 있다.  

 

2019년, 푸틴이 감옥에 가두기 직전, 야당 지도자 알렉세이 나발니 (Alexei Navalny)는 로고진의 개인 부정부패를 고발했다.

 

고발 내역을 보면, 개인 부 축적, 3억 5400만원 공금으로 메세데스-벤츠 S560구매, 레인지-로버를 자기 아내에게 선물, 고연봉, 35.4억 짜리 호화 별장 (다차 dacha라고 함)  개인 구입 등이다.

 

 

소결.

 

마에자와의 개인 특이성을 고려하지 않더라도, 이러한 러시아 로스코스모스의 재정 악화 상황에서, 국적을 막론하고 개인 부자들의 개인 소비는 러시아 푸틴의 입장에서는 환영할만 하다.

Russian rocket launches carrying Japanese billionaire and his assistant to the International Space Station

A Russian cosmonaut, a Japanese billionaire and his production assistant rocketed into orbit Wednesday, chased down the International Space Station and successfully docked to kick off a 12-day visit, the first by paying "space tourists" in more than a decade.

The mission serves as a stepping stone of sorts to a much more ambitious flight by Yusaku Maezawa, the founder of Zozotown, the largest online fashion retailer in Japan. 

 

He is working with SpaceX to charter a flight around the moon aboard the company's Starship rocket when testing is complete.

But first, Maezawa, working through Virginia-based Space Adventures, is paying the Russian space agency Roscosmos an undisclosed amount to fly him and his assistant, Yozo Hirano, to the space station. Hirano is a film producer who will document the flight for Maezawa's YouTube channel.

"I feel like an elementary school student about to go on an outing," Maezawa said during a pre-launch news conference. "I didn't think I would be able to go to space... I feel fortunate to have this opportunity and to finally fulfill my dream."

 

With veteran cosmonaut Alexander Misurkin at the controls of the Soyuz MS-20/66S spacecraft, flanked on the left by Maezawa and on the right by Hirano, the spacecraft's Soyuz 2.1a rocket roared to life at 2:38 a.m. EST (12:38 p.m. local time) and climbed away from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan.

Eight minutes and 45 seconds after launch, the Soyuz ferry ship was released from the booster's upper stage, solar panels and antennas then unfolded as planned and the spacecraft set off after the space station. After a carefully scripted sequence of rendezvous rocket firings, the Soyuz glided to a picture-perfect docking at the lab's space-facing Poisk module at 8:40 a.m.

"Our heartfelt congratulations with the successful docking to the ISS," Dmitri Rogozin, director of the Russian space agency Roscosmos, radioed. "How are our Japanese friends feeling?"

"I'm really fine," Maezawa replied in English.

After a series of leak checks, hatches were opened and the crew was welcomed aboard by Expedition 66 commander Anton Shkaplerov and his Soyuz MS-19/64S crewmates Pyotr Dubrov and Mark Vande Hei, along with four Crew Dragon astronauts: NASA's Raja Chari, Thomas Marshburn, Kayla Barron and European Space Agency flier Matthias Maurer.

Maezawa's "intention is to try to share the experience of what it means to be in space with the general public," Space Adventures President Tom Shelley told The Associated Press.

 

 He plans to document "simple things about daily life to maybe some some other fun activities, to more serious questions as well."

In 2018, Maezawa joined SpaceX founder Elon Musk at the California rocket builder's factory near Los Angeles to announce plans for chartering a flight around the moon using a huge new rocket that SpaceX now calls the Starship. 

 

He plans to invite about eight guests to join him on the venture.

"Ever since I was a kid, I have loved the moon," Maezawa said when the flight was announced. 

"Just staring at the moon filled my imagination. 

That is why I could not pass up this opportunity to see the moon up close."

At the same time, he said, "I did not want to have such a fantastic experience by myself. That would be a little lonely. I don't like being alone, so I want to share this experiences with as many people as possible."

Musk would not disclose how much Maezawa is paying for the trip, but said it was a "non-trivial" amount that would help fund the rocket's development. 

 

SpaceX hopes to launch a Starship on its first unpiloted test flight to orbit early next year. 

 

Maezawa's "Dear Moon" mission is tentatively planned for 2023.

In a quote provided by Space Adventures, Maezawa said he was "excited to share every aspect of my (space station visit) with everyone on Earth. 

 

I also see this trip as an opportunity to ready myself to be the best host possible when I, and eight talented crewmates from around the world, embark on the first civilian mission around the moon in 2023."

The Soyuz launching marked the fifth piloted trip to the space station this year, the third Russian Soyuz flight and 

the second carrying non-professional passengers.

A Russian actress and her producer visited the lab in October to film scenes for a movie in a government-sanctioned project. 

 

But Maezawa paid for his seat and Hirano's, making them the first "space tourists" to launch to the station since 

Cirque du Soleil founder Guy Laliberté paid for a visit in 2009.


Between Laliberte's flight and this year, Soyuz launches were used exclusively to carry professional cosmonauts and 

astronauts. 

 

Since 2006, NASA has paid Roscosmos some $4 billion for more than 70 Soyuz seats that were used by agency 

astronauts and fliers representing the European Space Agency, Canada and Japan.

Russia plans to slash funding for spaceflight activities during the coming three-year period, from 2022 to 2024. The cuts will come to about 16 percent annually, several Russian publications, including Finanz.ru, report. (These Russian-language articles were translated for Ars by Rob Mitchell.)

For 2022, the state budget for space activities will be set at 210 billion rubles ($2.9 billion), a cut of 40.3 billion rubles ($557 million) from the previous year. Similar cuts will follow in subsequent years. The most significant decreases will be in areas such as “manufacturing-technological activities" and "cosmodrome development." Funding for "scientific research and development" was zeroed out entirely.

The publications say Russian President Vladimir Putin is unhappy with the performance of Russia's space program. At a space industry meeting on September 29, they report, Putin criticized the industry’s failure to fulfill directives on long-term goals in the space sphere. In 2020, for example, Roscosmos failed to hit 30 of the 83 stated goals of the national space program.

Putin has reportedly told the Russian space corporation, Roscosmos, that it must increase the reliability of Russian rockets and "master" the next generation of launch vehicles. This directive has come in response to growing competition in the global space launch business, particularly from US-based SpaceX.

These budget cuts, however, will only further constrain the leader of Roscosmos, Dmitry Rogozin. He is already facing budgetary pressures from the loss of income from flying NASA astronauts to the International Space Station—a project valued at about $400 million or more annually—as well as United Launch Alliance no longer purchasing RD-180 rocket engines.

The cuts also raise questions about the future of Roscosmos, which has been restructured on multiple occasions during the last decade. Following the breakup of the Soviet Union in the early 1990s, Roscosmos acted in a manner similar to that of NASA. As a space agency, it had a number of contractors who provided services and built rockets, spacecraft, and satellites. Among the biggest of these were RKK Energia, The Khrunichev Center, RCC Progress, NPO Energomash, TsENKI, and TsNIIMash.

In 2013, Russia re-nationalized its space industry and converted the contracting companies into corporations owned and operated by the state. Three years later, the Russian national space agency was then dissolved and merged into the Roscosmos State Corporation, which became the parent company for the state-owned space companies.

Rogozin became the head of Roscosmos in 2018, and last year he further reorganized its subsidiaries into business blocks.

In recent years, Roscosmos has been beset by corruption in its efforts to build a large new spaceport in the eastern part of the country. In 2019, before he was jailed by Putin, opposition leader Alexei Navalny alleged widespread corruption across the Russian space enterprise and detailed how Rogozin appears to have enriched himself personally.

According to documents uncovered by Navalny, Rogozin used Roscosmos funding to purchase a Mercedes-Benz S560 for himself and a Range Rover for his wife. Combined, these vehicles are valued at about $300,000. The Roscosmos chief then acquired an 8,600-square-foot dacha north of Moscow worth about $3 million. And the documents appear to obscure even more gains, Navalny argued.

Rogozin has denied these allegations. And frankly, for a Western-based journalist who does not speak Russian or fully understand Russian politics, it can be difficult to disentangle truth from lie. But what does seem clear is that the Russian space program's future is bleak. Whereas China is rising with a space station of its own and ambitious new exploration plans and the US space industry is flourishing amid a rise in commercial activity, Russia is seeking to maintain a status quo of space vehicles developed decades ago.

The country's space employees are already paid extremely low wages. Now, there will be fewer resources to invest in the future—a future into which Putin has charged Rogozin with leading Russia's space program. This cannot be a comfortable position for a certain Dmitry Olegovich Rogozin.
