a smuggling racket (불법으로 돈 버는 행위)

by 원시 2021. 8. 29.

John Clarke

The quest for profits in Toronto has created an oversupply of luxury housing and now it's weed shops. Their owners include former cops who used to put people away for doing the same thing on a smaller scale. It makes you think

of Al Capone's observation that 'capitalism is the legitimate racket of the ruling class.'

Ben Marenlensky

I never thought I’d be the one complaining about weed shops but this is ridiculous. We don’t need a 7th fucking dispensary in the short strip on Yonge from College to Dundas.

I think most of the people opening these shops are completely ignorant of how thin the margins are. All of them have to buy from OCS which sets all prices, PLUS compete with OCS.

Supply and demand. Downtown Toronto is the hight of both decadence and deprivation.

Dan Lovell There is no way there is this much demand. In every neighbourhood, weed shops are popping up everywhere. Most of them won’t survive, only the ones backed by big companies that are “diversifying”. I agree with John’s description of “oversupply” here. In my neighbourhood (Bloordale), I counted 10+ shops (all new) opening up within a 3-street radius. And many of them opened up after small-business owners have been pushed out during the pandemic.

They’re looking for tourist money, not too smart given much of the US beat Canada in the race to legalize, mail order has been legit or semi legit for years.
But these suited hoodlums can still profit by opening then closing failed businesses, so I doubt farsighted retail business acumen is a very high priority

I ran an illegal bong shop for 14 years. Battled with the undercovers almost daily. Big advantage being a lawyer. The undercovers would use language and phrases directly out of the case law. LOL. So clever. At one point they even had me and my girlfriend under surveillance, like we were terrorist or something. They were so clumsy at it and so easily spotted. What a waste of taxpayer resources.
So happy to sell to one of my wholesaler's sons. He had dollar signs in his eyes. I sold on March 1, 2020. On March 8th, the province declared its first shut down. Talk about being born with a horse shoe up one's ass. Glad to be out, now that it is legal.

Dispensaries are probably one of the only things keeping Toronto commercial real estate prices above water. None of them are making money though, and when the deep pockets behind them start to get emptied tons will close. I'm sure landlords are hoping covid will end and a new crop of people to fleece will emerge so they don't have to lower rents

There are two pot shops in the small section of Pape Avenue on the stretch between Floyd and Cosburn. Even more down on the Danforth. I don't have a problem with weed but I do have issues with the present system. Once the pockets of the company owners/shareholders start drying up, there will be a lot of shops up for rent. Also sad that so many of these shops displaced small family-run businesses. Much of downtown Toronto is a sea of chains instead of the small restos and independent stores that used to exist. It's also not a nice place to be at night anymore.

John still lots of shops in Tyendinaga. And the stuff is good. I love it that I can still get weed that is sweet and mellow, like in the sixties, and doesn't blow the top of my head off.

I've expected something like this to happen when they made it legal. In Germany,while all the small businesses have to give up due to huge companies and Amazon lowering prices, there are shisha bars everywhere. Small cities who (claim) not to get any money from the government, earn loads of tax money from them, while at the same time, it makes the right-wing gain power as these shisha bars are owned by mainly the Turkish/ Arabs
