Canada's first subway, the Yonge subway, opened in 1954 with a length of 7.4 kilometres (4.6 mi).
The line ran under or parallel to Yonge Street between Eglinton Avenue and Union station.
It replaced the Yonge streetcar line, Canada's first streetcar line.
