일본, 홀로 죽는 사람 숫자 증가. 2만 2222명은 죽고 난 후 8일 지나서 발견.
Japan Daily · Landmark forensic statistics from the National Police Agency have laid bare the severe human reality of Japan’s aging and isolated population, documenting that tens of thousands of citizens pass away unnoticed in their homes each year.
According to official 2025 data covering more than 204,000 cases handled by police investigators, 76,941 deaths occurred among individuals living entirely alone.
Most harrowing was the duration before discovery: 22,222 people lay deceased for eight days or more before being found, and 7,148 were not discovered for over a month.
Elderly residents aged 65 and older accounted for 58,919 of the unattended deaths, with men making up nearly 80% of the total—reflecting deep-rooted tendencies among older single men to disconnect from community safety nets and healthcare outreach.
The findings have accelerated local government trials of automated utility-usage sensors and mail carrier welfare visits as Japan scrambles to rebuild neighborhood support frameworks for its 23 million single-person households.
