Tens of millions of people around the world are being impacted by an 8.8 magnitude earthquake that struck near a remote part of Russia but has consequences for coastal areas across the Pacific.
In Russia’s district of Severo-Kurilsk, near the epicenter of the earthquake, a state of emergency was issued after tsunami waves lashed the coast, tearing boats from their moorings and carrying away storage containers, according to state media TASS and videos from the scene.
In Japan, more than 1.9 million people were told to evacuate as waves hit much of the northern and eastern coasts. Video shared by Reuters and Nippon News Network showed people sheltering on roofs as waves hit Japan’s northernmost island of Hokkaido. But Japan has avoided any major damage so far.
Thousands of miles away, tsunami waves up to 5 feet high have hit Hawaii. Emergency shelters have opened and Honolulu residents have been told to seek higher ground, as the governor warns waves “will wrap around the islands.”
California officials are scrambling to warn residents of possible impending tsunami waves. The Monterey sheriff has told people living on vessels in Moss Landing, a popular surf spot, to evacuate. Helicopters have been flying over coastal parts of Los Angeles, blaring sirens to warn boaters and beachgoers that a tsunami advisory is in effect.
California has the biggest coastal population in the US, with almost 27 million people residing in counties near the sea, according to the Office for Coastal Management.
The Philippines, Indonesia, China, Chile, Peru, Mexico, Panama and Taiwan have also issued tsunami advisories, warnings and watches.

US Navy helps with evacuations in Hawaii, spokesperson says
From CNN’s Brad Lendon
The US Navy has secured vessels in Hawaii ports and directed the evacuation of shorelines and beaches as tsunami waves hit the state, a spokesperson for Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam on the main island of Oahu said.
The military also opened a pass on Oahu’s western Waianae Coast to help facilitate evacuation efforts, Navy Region Hawaii spokesperson Lydia Robertson said.
The Navy was also working to ensure information from the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center and NOAA, which are located on the base, was reaching the public, she said.
“Our highest priority is safety as we assess and prepare for potential changes in conditions,” Robertson said.

Tsunami waves can travel at speed “like a jet plane,” forecasting expert says
From CNN's Kathleen Magramo
Hawaii’s north shore will “probably” see some flooding as tsunami waves arrive in the state, while waves may be smaller on the US West Coast, Yong Wei, a senior research scientist at the University of Washington and NOAA’s Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory said.
Wei cautioned people to be alert and to stay away from the beach, explaining that tsunami waves differ significantly from typical ocean waves.
“They travel around 700 kilometers (435 miles) per hour which is like a jet plane,” he told CNN’s Lynda Kinkade.
Once the tsunami wave reaches shallow water, the energy is released in the wave’s height which can cause severe damage along the coastline, Wei said.
