The Sun Fires Trillions of Trillions of Watts – But Earth Gets Just 0.000000045%
The Sun emits an astonishing 3,860 trillion trillion watts of energy as electromagnetic radiation, traveling through space as waves and particles. This immense energy output, known as the Sun’s luminosity, fuels the entire solar system.
Despite its staggering power, only a tiny fraction reaches Earth. By the time sunlight travels 93 million miles (150 million km) to reach us, just 175 quadrillion watts – 0.000000045% – arrive at Earth. And yet, even this small portion is enough to drive weather patterns, sustain life, and power natural processes like photosynthesis.
