Protest against Elon Musk held outside of Tesla dealership in Kitchener
Protesters are hoping to make a dent in Tesla's stock value while standing up for Canadian sovereignty

A group of about 15 protesters gathered outside of the Tesla dealership in Kitchener on Saturday as part of a boycott connected to Elon Musk, the CEO of the electric vehicle company.
The protest in Kitchener is just one of several others happening in cities across Canada, including Hamilton, Vancouver and Ottawa.
From Montreal to Toronto, Tesla protests have been cropping up across the country — with one of the most recent ones taking place outside the Tesla dealership in Kitchener.
Some drivers honked their horns in support while driving by the protest on Saturday. Others booed and cussed at the protesters as they drove by.
For those like Kitchener's Cate Davis, boycotting Tesla is a show of Canadian pride.
"I'm here cause I'm pissed," she said. "It's time to stand up and show the country what we are and what we're about... because this is absolute insanity and I'm not going to stand for it and neither should anyone else."

Clay Eccles, who drove from Cambridge to take part in the protest, is hoping to send a clear message to Elon Musk.
"He's not a good person... I'd like to see him go out of business," Eccles said. "Canadians have been provoked and we're not going to put up with this."
The protest in Kitchener is just one of many that have been happening across Canada and the United States.
Most of the protests in Canada have been peaceful, except for a handful where demonstrators have vandalised Tesla property.

Protesters say Musk, the company's CEO, has been closely associated with U.S. President Donald Trump. Sentiment against the American president has turned sour in much of Canada since Trump started imposing tariffs on Canadians goods. Trump has said his desired outcome of the trade war is for Canada to become the 51st state.
Since then, thousands of Canadians signed a petition to have Musk's citizenship revoked for his attempts to "attack Canadian sovereignty."
Trump has equated the acts of vandalism at Tesla dealerships in the United States to domestic terrorism.
Dan Horner, an associate professor in the department of criminology at Toronto Metropolitan University, is an expert in analyzing protests and political violence.
He says Trump's strong language against the demonstrators is on par with the messaging his administration has put out over the last couple of months.

"This ramping up of hostile language toward their enemies and sort of zeroing in on people who they see as opposition to them with very strong language and promises of very severe legal repercussions... What we're seeing being unleashed on the global scale is definitely a deeply polarized brand of politics," he said.
During an all-hands meeting on Thursday night, Elon Musk told Tesla employees they should keep their stock, which has sharply dropped in value this year.

He also addressed the recent instances of vandalism at Tesla dealerships.
"If you read the news, it feels like Armageddon. I can't walk past the TV without seeing a Tesla on fire," Musk said during the meeting, as employees laughed with him.
"Listen, I understand if you don't want to buy our product, but you don't have to burn it down. That's about unreasonable. Like, this is psycho. Stop being psycho."

Some Tesla owners trying to distance themselves from Musk
Some Tesla owners who were once proud to own the electric vehicle are reportedly now embarrassed to be associated with the brand, as public furor against the company and its CEO gain momentum.
Tesla owners who aren't fans of the company's owner are either scooping up anti-Musk bumper stickers or boycotting the brand by getting rid of their vehicles altogether.

From bumper stickers to boycotts, how Tesla owners are distancing themselves from Elon Musk
"Five years ago, I considered Elon Musk an idol and admired his business ventures with Tesla and SpaceX in particular," said Paul Turnbull, of Ottawa.
"I was a proud purchaser of a Tesla Model Y soon after they became available for order in Canada in 2021. I still own and enjoy the car today, but it is no longer a source of pride as it once was given the current negative stigma against Elon."
Musk has lost several billion dollars of his personal wealth this year as shares in Tesla and sales of its electric vehicles plunge.
Trump has said that Musk and Tesla are being treated unfairly, and Musk told Fox News on Tuesday that "Tesla is a peaceful company. We've never done anything harmful. I've never done anything harmful. I've only done productive things."

Metro Vancouver residents join 'Tesla Takedown' protests against Musk, Trump
Protesters speak out against Elon Musk’s political interference and ties to U.S. President Donald Trump

Metro Vancouver residents joined a wave of "Tesla Takedown" protests this weekend happening in several cities across Canada, the United States and parts of Europe.
Protesters say they have been moved to act by Tesla CEO Elon Musk's "interfering" in politics and his role advising U.S. President Donald Trump, who has in recent weeks slapped steep tariffs on Canadian goods, sparking an ongoing trade war, and repeatedly suggested Canada would be better off as the 51st state.
About two dozen demonstrators gathered outside a Tesla dealership in Surrey, B.C., on Sunday, holding signs with messages such as "elbows up" and "Elon be-gone."

Dual Canadian-American citizen Jen Gagnon helped organize the event and says following U.S. politics has "felt like watching (her) childhood home burn down" since Trump's election last fall.
Gagnon says she has been avoiding buying American products when possible, but she felt compelled to do more to push back against Trump, Musk and "creeping" fascism in Canada.
Another demonstrator, Juan Alperin, attended the protest with his 12-year-old son, saying he had been looking to take actions that ensure his son's future is "as bright as the one that can be."
Alperin is a professor in the faculty of communication, art and technology at Simon Fraser University, and says he's worried that deliberative democracy is declining while authoritarianism is rising.

"All of the platforms in which we communicate and talk to one another are controlled more and more by the tech oligarchy," he said, referring to platforms such as X, which is owned by Musk.
"We're seeing that the press is being owned by billionaires, the social media we use is owned by the same billionaires, and the alignment that is happening in the United States ... is just a more overt version of the same kind of thing that's happening in Canada."
Musk is a self-described "free speech absolutist" who has faced criticism from hate-speech watchdogs for allowing extremist, dangerous and antisemitic comments to flourish on X.
He is also the world's richest person and runs his businesses as he advises Trump on ways to overhaul the federal government through the newly created Department of Government Efficiency.

Tesla owners caught up in Elon Musk controversies
The growing opposition to Elon Musk’s politics and his role in the U.S. government has Tesla owners caught in the middle, with some saying they’re embarrassed to be seen supporting a Musk brand.
Vancouver resident Andrew Balakshin was at Sunday's protest in Surrey and said he believed billionaires were "interfering" with politics in North America and Europe in ways they shouldn't be.
Balakshin said he disagreed with a post Musk recently shared from another user on X saying "Stalin, Mao and Hitler didn't murder millions of people. Their public sector workers did."
"I'm also against the attacks on Canadian sovereignty ... by saying Canada is not a country and that our prime minister is a governor," Balakshin said, referring to quips by Musk earlier this year.
Sunday's protest outside the Surrey Tesla dealership inspired a steady stream of honks of support from passing drivers.

An employee inside the Surrey Tesla dealership said they were not authorized to speak in response to the protests, and directed The Canadian Press to contact the company's media relations team.
The Tesla media team did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the protests.
Tesla has been a target for protests and vandalism since Musk became a key figure in Trump's administration.

Gunshots were fired at a Tesla dealership in Oregon this month, while four Cybertrucks were destroyed in a blaze in Seattle, but investigators have not said if the flames were sparked on purpose.
The "Tesla Takedown" protest events are posted on a website called Action Network, which individuals and community groups use to promote what the site describes as "progressive causes."
The site shows dozens of protests scheduled across the United States through the rest of this month and into early April.

There were protests outside Tesla dealerships in Ottawa and Vancouver on Saturday, with another planned in Kitchener, Ont., later in March.
Gagnon, who moved to Canada from the United States about a decade ago, says the protests are partly aimed at encouraging people not to buy Teslas in hopes of reducing Musk's wealth.
The protests come a few days after British Columbia's Crown utility, B.C. Hydro, announced it was removing Tesla products from its electric vehicle rebate program.
The move is in line with B.C.'s efforts to prioritize Canadian goods and exclude American products from rebates when practical as the trade dispute between the two countries wears on.
