2010년에는 청년 68%가 자본주의를 긍정적으로 평가한 반면, 2018년 갤럽 조사에서는 45%만이 긍정적인 체제라고 답했다. 지난 8년간 23%나 감소했다.
2018년 여론조사 기관 갤럽에 따르면, 미국 청년(18세~29세)층 61%가 사회주의를 선호하고, 58%만이 자본주의에 대해 긍정적으로 평가했다.
미국 주류는 보통 다음과 같이 정치적 이념을 이분법적으로 구분한다. 첫번째는 자본주의적 자유시장, 개인주의적 자유, 자기 책임과 같은 미국 주류 이념들 (이데올로기들), 두번째는 칼 마르크스의 사회주의, 집단주의 (collectivism) 와 같은 이념들.
대학 등록금 무료, 의료 무료 등과 같은 정책을 선호하는 미국 청년들이 사회주의에 경도되어 있다고 폭스 뉴스 진행자가 '끔직하게 무섭다 terrifying'는 반응을 보였다. 미국 주류세력들에게는 이 여론조사가 굉장히 충격적이다.
그래서 미국 자녀들이 사회주의에 물들지 않게 하는 방법들을 제시했다. "자녀들에게 사회주의는 안돼 !"
폭스 뉴스 보도, 미국 친-사회주의 바람은 어디서 불어오는가? 헐리우드 영화계, 음악 산업, 스포츠 스타, 미국 교사들과 대학 교수들이다. 이들에 맞서 미국 부모들은 자녀들에게 "사회주의는 안돼 No to Socialism" 을 어떻게 가르칠 것인가?
너무 식상한 논리이고, 참신하지는 않은 해묵은 주장이 먼저 나온다.
폭스 뉴스 주장 1. 사회주의의 '소유권', 사적 소유권 제한, 소위 생산수단의 사회화는 도덕적으로 나쁘다. 비도덕적이다. 최근 베네수엘라 이 주장의 논거로 들이댄다.
그리고 정치적인 자유, 언론 자유를 사회주의 정부는 억압한다. 중국, 북한, 베네수엘라가 이러한 사례에 든다.
소수 권리가 무시되고 억압당한다. 채식주의자 사례를 들다.
주장 2. 정부의 역할은 제한적인데, 사회주의는 정부가 지나친 권력을 행사한다.
정부의 강제/강압 (coercion) 보다는 개인의 '자비 charity' 와 자선을 강조해야 한다고 주장.
별로 새롭지 않는 뉴스이다. 빌 게이츠, 워렌 버핏 등 부자의 자선이 정부의 사회복지 정책보다 더 낫다는 주장인데, 설득력이 별로 없다. 왜냐하면 과거 20세기 소련 사회주의가 현실에서 작동하지 않고 민주주의 체제를 억압했던 것만큼, 미국 자본주의 사회에서 부자들이 미국 가난한 이웃들을 충분히 도울만큼 기부를 충분히 하지 않았기 때문이다. 둘 다 효과적이지 않고 지속가능하지도 않다.
주장 3. 지난 역사에서 사회주의는 성공한 사례가 없다. 오히려 범죄가 만연했다.
이것은 50%는 맞고, 50%는 틀린 주장이다. 미국 등 헤게모니 자본주의 국가들도 수많은 전쟁을 벌였고, 무고한 시민들을 죽였기 때문이다. 체제 경쟁, 자본주의 시장 체제의 우월성을 논할 수는 있겠지만, 이게 이념으로서 '사회주의'나 정치 지향으로서 사회주의가 틀렸다거나 무의미하다는 주장으로 귀결되지 않는다.
현재 미국 청년들 중에 사회주의를 선호한 사람들이 소련의 정치수용소 '굴락 Gulag'을 찬성한 사람들이 얼마나 되겠는가? 거의 0%에 가까울 것이다.
주장 4. 최근 미국 청년층이 민주당 상원 버니 샌더스, 악렉산드라 오카시오-코르테즈 의원을 추종하고 있고, 이들은 덴마크 노르웨이 스웨덴 모델이 미국보다 더 낫다고 본다.
폭스뉴스 주장 - 그러나 덴마크 노르웨이 스웨덴 등 노르딕 모델은 자유 비지니스, 사적 소유권, 시장의 자유를 보장하는 민주주의 체제이지, 사회주의가 아니다. 그런데 미국 청년들이 버니 샌더스와 오카시오 코르테즈를 좋아하면서, 이들의 사회주의를 추종하고 있는데, 그 개념이 잘못되었다.
위 [폭스 뉴스 논거 문제점] 사회주의 개념 정의는 현재 미국인들의 정치적 '합의'와 실천 능력에 따라 거기에 맞게 수립된다. 칼 마르크스의 '사회주의' 개념이나 20세기 소련 사회주의, 21세기 중국, 북한,베네수엘라 사회주의만이 '사회주의'는 아니다. 문제 핵심은 미국 청년들이 현재 민주당 주류와 공화당과 트럼프를 반대하면서 그 대안으로 주창하는 정치적 이념이 '사회주의'라는데 있다.
그렇게 때문에 폭스 뉴스 주장은 미국 청년들이 가리키는 '사회주의'를 20세기 실패한 사회주의라고 그들을 가르치려 하지만, 현재 미국 청녀들에게 외면당하는 미국 의료, 교육체제를 바꾸지 않는다면, 폭스 뉴스의 도덕적 설교는 힘을 잃을 것이다.
'사회주의' 개념은 화석화된 교조가 아니다. 20세기 실패한 사회주의 체제, 칼 마르크스의 사회주의 개념, 21세기 밀레니아 미국 청년들과 버니 샌더스가 말하는 '사회주의' 사이에는 어떤 공통점이 있을 수 있다. 그 공통점을 연구하는 게 더 중요한가, 아니면 과거 오류들을 극복하고, 또 현재 미국 자본주의의 문제점들을 고쳐 나가려고 하는 새로운 정치 운동, '미국식 사회주의' American Socialism 이라는 새로운 이름이 더 중요한가

Despite mountains of historical evidence revealing the dangers associated with socialism, support for Karl Marx’s collectivist ideas is steadily increasing.
In an August 2018 Gallup Poll, 51 percent of young people aged 18-29 said they have a favorable opinion of socialism, compared to just 45 percent who said they view capitalism positively.
Compare that to 2010, when 68 percent of young people said they view capitalism favorably. That’s a remarkable 23 percent decline in just eight years.
Many parents who support the traditional American values of self-responsibility, individual liberty and free markets, have been left to wonder how they can teach their children the truth about collectivism and resist the rise of socialism.
Below are strategies for talking to young people about the dangers of communism, socialism and other progressive ideas.

Explain the meaning of socialism and why it’s immoral
Every conversation about socialism should begin with a discussion about what it actually entails. Survey data show most Americans have no clue what socialism is, despite the fact that it’s regularly discussed in the media.
Socialism is the collective ownership and management of property. In a purely socialist society – an idea Karl Marx called “communism” – all or nearly all property is owned and managed by the collective.
Under such a scheme, people have very little power over their own lives.
Even their homes are owned collectively. In the case of democratic socialism, this means that people are forced to live according to the desires of the majority.
In many situations, a small group of people is given power by the majority, and that group typically ends up becoming tyrannical, as we’ve seen in China, North Korea and Venezuela.
With this model in place, minorities don’t really have any rights.
If the majority thinks people should live or work in a certain way, everyone is required to obey, even if it violates their deeply held beliefs. For example, in a socialist country, vegetarians would be required to be part owners in a slaughterhouse.
In socialism, individual “rights” are mere illusions.
Even free-speech rights are limited if they are deemed “harmful” to the rest of society – which means these “rights” don’t really exist at all. This is why human rights abuses are so common in countries that try to enact socialism.

Emphasize charity, not government coercion
For most young Americans, socialist ideas are appealing because they genuinely want to help those who are suffering.
They believe single-payer health care, a “Green New Deal,” and other similar policies are compassionate. Conservatives have a tendency to dismiss these ideas without providing alternatives. This leaves younger people feeling frustrated.
“Government social programs might not be perfect,” young liberals and socialists often tell me, “but at least liberals and socialists are trying to fix difficult problems like poverty. Conservatives and libertarians don’t care what happens to people who are suffering.”
Whenever parents discuss socialism, they should always explain that it’s important to engage in charitable activities.
Advocates of freedom do support helping others, they just don’t believe the government is best equipped to do it.
This idea is best reinforced when families engage in charitable activities together. Parents must show their kids that motivated, compassionate conservatives care for those most in need and make the world a better place.
This conversation allows parents to make a very important moral argument: Charity is morally positive, because it means people are voluntarily helping those in need, but government welfare programs – however well-intentioned they might be – are not forms of charity.
They require the government to use force and coercion. Those who don’t want to pay for a government program because they think it isn’t helpful – or perhaps believe it’s harmful – are forced to pay their taxes and participate anyway.
Those who refuse can end up in prison.
Or, put simply, conservatives support people freely helping others, while those on the left advocate for forcing, manipulating and controlling people to accomplish their goals.
Explain that there’s never been a successful socialist nation in world history
Here’s a startling fact about socialism that every child should hear:
During the past century, tens of millions of people have been killed, exiled or imprisoned by socialist and communist parties, and no country has ever successfully enacted a system that matches Marx’s vision for the world – a reality even the staunchest Marxist will admit.
Kids often respond to this fact by saying that there are many examples of socialism working successfully.
Like Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., they point to Denmark, Norway and Sweden.
The idea that Nordic nations are little socialist utopias is a gigantic myth. Denmark, Norway and Sweden are absolutely not “socialist” nations.
Some parts of their economies have been socialized, like health care and higher education, but they are still market-based economies, and in many respects, their citizens are freer than Americans.
For example, in the Heritage Foundation’s “2019 Index of Economic Freedom,” Denmark, Norway and Sweden all score higher than the United States in numerous categories, including “property rights” and “business freedom.”
Furthermore, history has repeatedly shown that government can’t fix many of our most complex societal issues, even when it socializes just one part of the economy.
For example, since the ObamaCare health insurance exchanges first opened, insurance premiums have doubled and deductibles have skyrocketed.
Talking about the dangers of socialism with kids isn’t easy. Children are constantly being bombarded with pro-socialist messages from Hollywood, the music industry, professional sports and, most importantly, their teachers and professors.
But if parents aren’t willing to put in the time to address these important ideas, who will?
